Locked vs Open Centre Diff (CDL)

Описание к видео Locked vs Open Centre Diff (CDL)

Does it really help to engage centre diff lock (CDL) in a constant or full-time 4wd? What are the effects of leaving CDL open off road?

We attempt to answer these questions and more visually in this 4x4 video. Although some 4wd vehicles claim to be constant 4wd or full-time 4x4 without locking the centre differential you are essentially in 1 wheel drive (unless you have axle diff locks engaged then you will have 2 wheel drive).

The "constant 4wd" only holds true while all 4 wheels have the same amount of resistance. However when a wheel looses traction and slips all drive/torque will be routed to that wheel.

We normally engage centre diff lock anytime we hit the dirt. This is somewhat similar to engaging 4x4 on part-time 4wds. It locks/splits the drive 50/50 to the front and rear axles.

Some have concerns that leaving the centre diff locked may cause binding issues. This is certainly the case on road however on the loose stuff off road it shouldn't be an issue. Off road the tyre will simply spin and through up some dirt rather than bind up the drive train.

We hope you enjoy this video and would like to hear from you in the comments as to when you engage CDL and what your experience has been. We would also love to have some feedback if you liked this type of video.

Feel free to share and smash the thumbs up if you enjoyed the video, it really means a lot to us.
